Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Gay Marriage Reflects The Constitution's 'Genius'

PHILADELPHIA -- Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who recently officiated at a friend's same-sex wedding, told a Philadelphia audience Friday that growing acceptance of gay marriage reflects the "genius" of the U.S. Constitution.

Ginsburg said equality has always been central to the Constitution, even if society has only applied it to minorities – be they women, blacks or gays – over time.

"So I see the genius of our Constitution, and of our society, is how much more embracive we have become than we were at the beginning," Ginsburg said in a far-ranging discussion of her work at the National Constitution Center, steps from the nation's founding at Independence Hall.

Openly gay men's college basketball player on coming out

Story Highlights

Jallen Messersmith announced to his teammates and coaches that he's gay
Messersmith is a 6-foot-7 shot-blocking specialist from Benedictine College
Messersmith's announcement comes on the heels of Jason Collins coming out as the first actively gay NBA player

Jallen Messersmith has been hearing gay slurs all his life.

They first started in middle school when the bullying was so brutal that he decided to be home-schooled in 7th and 8th grade.

He still hears the "you're gay" and "that's gay" and other slurs. He's even heard them from his teammates.

"Basketball has always been an outlet for me," he said. "Basketball helped get me through high school. I'd use the bullying as motivation to get better on the court. The more that fans or players poke and prod at me, the better I feel like I'll play. They're the ones who are losing at the end of the day."

New Zealand Couples Take Marriage to the Sky

New Zealand's department of internal affairs says that roughly 1,000 marriage applications have been downloaded in the week since same sex marriage was legalised. Some couple celebrated by exchanging vows in the sky.

Approximately 30 couples were invited aboard an Air New Zealand flight to Auckland for an in-flight marriage ceremony. The lucky couples were winners of a contest held by the New Zealand tourism board. A choir serenading the newlyweds with a traditional Maori love song while US actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson spoke at the proceedings.

The 1,000 marriage applications is about three times the normal amount for a week in New Zealand. Internal affairs says 170 were from different countries, mainly from Australia Hong Kong, Russia and the US.

New Zealand's Marriage Amendment Act, passed in April, legalised same sex marriage by removing the gender and sexual orientation clause from existing statutes
