Openly gay men's college basketball player on coming out

Story Highlights

Jallen Messersmith announced to his teammates and coaches that he's gay
Messersmith is a 6-foot-7 shot-blocking specialist from Benedictine College
Messersmith's announcement comes on the heels of Jason Collins coming out as the first actively gay NBA player

Jallen Messersmith has been hearing gay slurs all his life.

They first started in middle school when the bullying was so brutal that he decided to be home-schooled in 7th and 8th grade.

He still hears the "you're gay" and "that's gay" and other slurs. He's even heard them from his teammates.

"Basketball has always been an outlet for me," he said. "Basketball helped get me through high school. I'd use the bullying as motivation to get better on the court. The more that fans or players poke and prod at me, the better I feel like I'll play. They're the ones who are losing at the end of the day."
