New Zealand Couples Take Marriage to the Sky

New Zealand's department of internal affairs says that roughly 1,000 marriage applications have been downloaded in the week since same sex marriage was legalised. Some couple celebrated by exchanging vows in the sky.

Approximately 30 couples were invited aboard an Air New Zealand flight to Auckland for an in-flight marriage ceremony. The lucky couples were winners of a contest held by the New Zealand tourism board. A choir serenading the newlyweds with a traditional Maori love song while US actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson spoke at the proceedings.

The 1,000 marriage applications is about three times the normal amount for a week in New Zealand. Internal affairs says 170 were from different countries, mainly from Australia Hong Kong, Russia and the US.

New Zealand's Marriage Amendment Act, passed in April, legalised same sex marriage by removing the gender and sexual orientation clause from existing statutes

France became the 14th nation to legalize gay marriage when President Francois Hollande signed the bill into law on May 18. While the United States debates the issue, the law has been on the books for more than a decade in some countries. And, like the movement in American states, there has been an acceleration worldwide in equal marriage laws.
